Earlier this year, Hatching Ideas began work with Middlesex University Student’s Union (MDXSU) on their CEO appraisal process.   

Having just developed and launched a new strategy, the time was right for MDXSU to refresh their approach to the annual CEO appraisal. Recognising the benefits of an effective appraisal on both individual and organisational growth and performance, MDXSU were keen to implement a contemporary CEO appraisal mechanism to support achievement of their strategic ambitions.  

Hatching Ideas worked closely with the CEO, Student Union’s President and members of the Trustee Board to understand MDSXU’s purpose and strategic ambitions within the context of their complex governance structure and operating model. As a democratically led organisation that deeply values inclusivity and innovation, it was clear that MDXSU needed a light, non-bureaucratic appraisal process that placed organisational values and purpose at the forefront of design.  

Reflective of our commitment to deliberate, relevant design that delivers tangible outcomes, Hatching Ideas is working iteratively with MDXSU to cocreate and implement a refreshed 360⁰ appraisal process. The tailored design featured a balanced focus on the CEO’s delivery of strategy in line with values, along with measures to support CEO health and wellbeing. Inclusive language and plain English were used in recognition of the diversity of MDXSU’s staff, student population and stakeholders.  

To empower confident, capable and meaningful participation, the design included coaching of sabbatical officers and others involved in the appraisal process. Sustainability and robustness of the process were also built in, with the flexibility to accommodate planned governance changes as MDXSU transitions to its future state.
